Scratch Golf Forged Wedge Club | Custom Grind, Chrome JLM 1018 DS

Posted on: Jan 31

Scratch Golf Forged Wedge Club These Scratch Golf wedges have developed a cult following for two reasons: They are very soft and have a different grind to suit every swing type.

When you first look at the club, it looks a bit generic, just a plain smoky chrome finish with an "S" on it. But don't be fooled; this is one of the best wedges out there and the fastest growing wedge on the PGA Nationwide Tour.

Let's start with the 1018 Forged Steel. The "1018" is the softest steel you will find in a golf club. (Typically we see most clubs made from 1025 steel.) The soft feel of this club is second to none. If you are the type of player that enjoys playing different shots around the green and you like to be creative, this is the wedge for you. The grooves are a "proprietary ABC groove" which has a strong bite but does not scuff your golf ball like the Titleist Vokey Spin Milled Wedge that I currently play with.

The main thing that sets this wedge apart is the different sole grinds. You see, a wedge can be grinded differently to alter the angle of impact. This particular wedge is the "DS" which stand for Driver / Slider. This has a moderate angle of attack. If you are looking for a shallow angle to sweep the ball off the turf, take a look at the "SS" - Sweeper / Slider. And for those of you who want to drive through the ball and take a divot, check out the "DD" - Digger / Driver. It is grinded with a steep angle of attack.

Mizuno Iron Set, MX 1000 4-GW | Adjustable Stainless Steel Clubs for High COR

Posted on: Jan 29

Mizuno Iron Set, MX 1000 4-GW Well, isn't this interesting? Mizuno, the king of "Players" clubs, is sticking their big toe in the game improvement department. Let's take a look at what they've come up with.

These MX-1000s were developed with a super COR and a massive MOI. They construct these bad boys by plasma-welding a thin steel face to the stainless steel body. This technology provides for a COR that reaches the legal limit. COR (Coefficient of Restitution) is the spring effect or trampoline effect.

In addition, the irons have a hollow construction that allow designers to move the weight to provide a huge MOI and a low center of gravity. The leading edge is aggressively beveled, and it has an "electroformed" medallion in the back cavity.

I like these clubs because they are designed for "game improvement," but they don't look like your typical oversized hacker's club. They are built with an incredible amount of technology, but on the down side, they come with the typical Mizuno high price tag. Before you buy, I would take a look at the Adams Idea A7 OS Hybrid Iron Set. This is my favorite hybrid iron set, and the price is a lot more affordable.

Adams Idea Hybrid Iron Set A7 OS | Oversized Club Head, Hollow Cavity Back

Posted on: Jan 27

Adams Idea Hybrid Iron Set A7 OS Adams has always been the leader in the hybrids, and they've really outdone themselves again with this set. I really like these A7 OS Hybrids.

Quick and simple: These clubs are going to help your game! The long irons have an extra 44 grams in the heel and toe for stability. The middle irons are hollow-back middle hybrids designed to get the ball up quick and high with spin, and the short irons are a conventional wide sole cavity back.

I like the looks of these club heads. Sure, they are a bit oversized, but not so bad so that it looks like those ping-pong paddles I've seen with some of the other brands.

I usually only recommend these hybrid sets for the beginners and the high handicappers, but I would like to expand that in regards to this set of A7s. I believe even the middle handicappers would appreciate the forgiveness of these hybrids.

I would bet in the near future we are going to see more and more average players realizing the game improvement qualities of a good set of hybrids. You better discover it before your playing partners do.

Nike Tiger Woods Forged Iron Set, 3-PW | Victory Red Blade Clubs w/ Chrome Carbon Steel

Posted on: Jan 25

Nike Tiger Woods Forged Iron Set, 3-PW Well, you found them. This is what the kid plays. By kid, of course I mean Tiger Woods. He not only plays these -- he gave his input to the Nike engineers who designed them. But can you handle them?

I assume you already know that it takes an accomplished player to be able to appreciate theses blades. I would no sooner let you hop in Jimmie Johnson's race car than have you spend all your hard-earned cash on Tiger Woods' golf clubs. So if you think you have what it takes, read on…

These Victory Red Forged Blades are things of beauty. Made of 1025 forged carbon steel with a chrome finish, they are a delight to look down on at address. However, you only need to pull out a long iron and waggle it a few times to understand that only the pure swinger is going love this club. The blade is like a butter knife. And of course it feels like butter when you hit it on the sweet spot!

From pitching wedge on up, the blades have a very consistent feel, a beautiful look at address, and an ease of workability to hit any variety of golf shots.

I would recommend these clubs for only the best of golfers. If you aren't sure, check out these Nike Victory Red Forged Split Cavity Irons. They are very similar but with a split cavity back and a little bit wider sole.

Tiger Woods Victory Red Forged Iron Club by Nike | Milled Carbon Steel, Split Cavity

Posted on: Jan 23

Tiger Woods Victory Red Forged IronSo you want to play Tiger Woods' irons, but you don't quite have Tiger Woods' game? These irons were made for you.

No, they are not for beginners - more for better players that want a tour-quality golf club, with a little bit more forgiveness than those hard-core blades the pros play with. The iron is a forged CNC-milled 1025 carbon steel. (This is the gold standard in high end golf clubs.) It is a forgiving cavity back but very shallow, thus it still can be manipulated and has good workability.

The coolest thing about these irons is the split back. This design tucks weight behind the sweet spot, and the center of gravity as well. The sole of the club is wider and slightly larger than Tiger's VR Forged TW Blade, and it is cambered to produce solid contact from various lies.

I would recommend this club for the low handicapper that is not ready for blades. You get a more forgiving club, but just as workable as the blade. The only difference I can tell: for the purist, you probably won't be happy with the feel and sound when you hit it solid. Let's face it -- when hit on the screws, nothing feels as good as the blade.

Nike DYMO² Str8-Fit Driver Club | SQ 69 Series, Adjustable Dynamic MOI

Posted on: Jan 21

Nike DYMO² Str8-Fit Driver Club Check out this DYMO² Str8-Fit Driver... Dymo stands for "Dynamic MOI" and the STR8-FIT technology is an adjustable fitting system that gives you eight different clubface lie angles.

Let's start with the MOI. This driver has a rear "PowerBow" which gets thicker as the loft increases from 8.5 degrees to a high lofted 14.5 degrees. Thus, more mass is shifted back and towards the heel side, giving the driver an added draw bias as the loft goes up. What's more is the higher lofts have a shallower face height, a more closed face angle, and a more upright lie angle. These all help you square the clubface at impact.

The real claim to fame of this club is the Str8-Fit adjustable fitting system. It is comprised of a specially designed shaft adapter and a hosel system. It works like this: the shaft adapter and hosel tilt 2 degrees off axis which leads to eight possible lie angles. Nike tests show that eight different settings produce up to 45 yard of directional difference.

Seems to me it's like having eight drivers in one. It's pretty easy to adjust as well. It comes with a wrench; just make sure you read the manual carefully and you will have no problems adjusting to your preference. If you tend to slice, simply adjust the face into one of three closed positions. And if you hook, go with one of three open positions.

I would recommend this driver for all levels of golfers. The only drawback, with the combination of the high MOI and the adjustable clubhead -- it is very difficult to blame this club when you hit the ball into the woods.

Electric Putting Partner from Golf Gifts & Gallery | Executive Golf Practice Tool

Posted on: Jan 19

Electric Putting Partner from GolfI've putted with something very similar to this for years. It was in one of my best friend's and coworker's office for at least 15 years. His name was Chris Brown. He kept two putters and three or four golf balls lying next to it. When any of us would get restless or head to the water cooler, we would stop by Chris' office and take a few putts and hone our putting skills.

It is actually a lot tougher than it looks. We typically would give ourselves about six to ten feet. What makes it tricky (besides reading the break of the office carpet) is getting the speed right. If you putt it too hard, it will just hit the ramp and fly right over the Putting Partner. Of course, if you put it too soft, then it won't get up the ramp at all.

The coolest thing is, once you get the hang of it, you don't have to move. The tool will return your ball directly back to in front of your toes. Make sure to go through your pre-shot routine each time so you can really groove that sweet stroke for later out on the links when it counts. You may laugh, but there were plenty of times in the past when I had a pressure putt to win some skins out on my home course, and I thought back to Chris' office and tried to recreate that tension-free stroke.

The Awesome Foursome: The World’s Best Trick Golf Balls | Exploding Golf Ball

Posted on: Jan 17

The Awesome Foursome: The World's BestEverybody has "that guy" in his group. You know the one; he takes the game a little too seriously. Everybody is tiptoeing around on eggshells when he's lining up his two-foot putt. God forbid somebody dares sniffle, or he will launch into some angry tirade. C'mon people, it's time to confront this bully. Maybe "confront" is too strong a word. Perhaps just a light-hearted practical joke will loosen him up.

This four-pack of trick balls is just what the doctor ordered. Of course, it has the ball that explodes on impact: The Exploder. It has one called The Phantom. This ball disintegrates into a watery mist on impact. The Jet Stream vanishes and then changes into fifteen feet of spiraling ribbon.

My favorite is The Unputtaball. This is perfect for your uptight opponent. The trick is switching the ball out so he doesn't realize he's not putting with his own ball, especially if he is one of those guys that has to line up his logo for every putt. Try this: while you politely offer to clean his ball with your towel, wager him a dollar he can't make that short putt without lining up the logo. Then switch out his ball with the Unputtaball and replace it on his mark. When he strokes it, the ball will look like a Mexican jumping bean, jumping and gyrating offline.

Warning: You should probably wait until the back nine to infuriate your temperamental friend. Nobody wants to put up with his pouting for more than a few holes.

Cleveland Launcher Driver Club w/ 460cc Clubhead | Shaun Micheel 2003 PGA Tour

Posted on: Jan 15

Cleveland Launcher Driver Club w/ 460ccAnybody remember the 2003 PGA Championship won by Shaun Micheel? "Shaun who," you ask? With a one shot lead on 18, he almost holed out his 7-iron from the rough, leaving it just two inches for the win!

Mr. Micheel had one of these Cleveland Launchers in his bag that weekend. Of course, this driver is really designed for the mid to high handicappers rather than for PGA pros. The reason is in its tremendous forgiveness and maxed-out spring effect. The huge 460cc head has an increased moment of inertia which increases your distance on off-center hits.

The coolest thing about the driver is the spring effect or trampoline effect. USGA stipulates the maximum C.O.R. (Coefficient of Restitution) to be .830. The Cleveland Launcher 460 conforms to this, actually meeting it precisely.

I would recommend this driver for all levels, but more for the golfer who is less consistent off the tee and looking for a club that will be long and forgiving as opposed to responsive and workable. For a driver that is more tour designed, I like the Callaway FT-9 Tour Driver. It still has the modern, large head, but with a toned-down sound and responsive workability.

Cleveland HiBORE Monster XLS Driver Club | Extra Large Clubhead

Posted on: Jan 13

Cleveland HiBORE Monster XLS DriverThis driver really is a monster! Cleveland has maxed out the USGA limits for dimensions (5" x 5".) Good thing for the USGA, or we'd all be swinging drivers the size of toaster ovens!

This is one of the most forgiving clubs out there and Cleveland's broadest hitting area. In fact, it is 16 percent larger than the HiBore XLS.

"Discretionary Weight" is the hip term when discussing these new drivers. It simply means club makers use the lightest, thinnest materials to construct the clubhead which gives them plenty of extra weight to configure in the best position in order to raise the MOI and lower the center of gravity. The Monster has a whopping 24 grams of discretionary weight spread across its rear to help correct those off-center hits.

The coolest thing about this driver is it comes in three different models: a smaller Tour 440cc with a 2 degree open clubface, this standard model which has a Square 460CC clubface, and a Draw 460cc with a 3 degree closed clubface.

I'm not a big fan of the huge clubhead, although I will concede it is great for those looking for a big range of forgiveness. If you tend to have problems closing the clubface, check out the Draw 460cc. Finally, if you are like me and prefer a little bit smaller and workable driver, take the Tour 440cc for a spin.
