Men’s Titleist Driver | 909 D2 Titanium Adjustable Club Head | SureFit Swingweight Screw

Posted on: Dec 30

Men's Titleist Driver When I think of a Titleist driver, I usually think of a players club designed for workability. But this isn't the case with this 909 D2 Driver. This driver features a low and deep center of gravity designed for reduced spin, higher MOI, and long, straight drives.

The clubhead is pear-shaped titanium 460CC. The tuned sole has pockets and an internal rib to reduce vibration and gives you a solid feel without that awful "tink" sound.

The coolest thing about this club is the SureFit Swingweight Screw which helps position the center of gravity. With numerous combinations, this helps optimize performance for better players.

At address, this is one of the more beautiful clubs to look at. I really like the arrow for alignment on the all-black clubhead. I also like the milled face insert with the thick center section shaped like an upside-down trapezoid. This is designed to help improve off-center hits.

I would recommend this driver for the lower handicappers that aren't too concerned with working the ball. Don't get me wrong -- you can still spin the ball some with this club, but if you really want a driver for working the ball, check out the Titleist 909 D3. It moves the center of gravity farther forward, and the 440CC head is a bit smaller.

Ping Rapture Men’s Driver Club | Weighted Tungsten Clubhead | Milled Titanium Face

Posted on: Dec 28

Ping Rapture Men's Driver Club This Men's Ping Rapture Driver is hot. It's the next generation of the enormously popular Ping G10. The club head is very similar to the G10 as well. Crescent-shape tungsten weights have been added in the heel and toe of the sole to move the weight back for a deep low center of gravity. The web crown design allows 20 grams of weight to be positioned inside the club head. This helps launch the ball higher with lower spin.

What's more is, the titanium face of the Ping Rapture is milled to give it a thin, variable thickness. This increases the ball speed even more for more total driver distance.

I like the way the club looks at setup. Even though it is a huge 460cc, it has a traditional design, but with all of today's cutting-edge engineering. The ball jumps off the face and carries farther with less spin than the Ping's G10.

I would recommend this golf club for all levels of golfers. It's a beautiful driver that will help you hit the ball long and straight. The only bad thing I can say about the club is from a visual standpoint. I'm not a big fan of the decal on the club head, and the green shaft is a bit over the top.

A Good Walk Spoiled — Paperback | John Feinstein Golf Books | Davis Love III

Posted on: Dec 26

A Good Walk Spoiled -- Paperback This bestseller is aptly named, "A Good Walk Spoiled." I believe John Feinstein borrowed the title from Mark Twain, and anybody who's played the game can relate. I read this book four years ago, and it still stands as one of the best golf books I've ever read.

Feinstein is lucky enough to travel with some of the best in the sport of golf, and he breaks down the pressures and the perks of being on the tour. His writing is anecdotal, and it draws you in from the first sentence.

One of my favorite stories is about Davis Love III at the Ryder Cup. Davis tells how he never really knew pressure until he got on the first tee and almost threw up on himself.

Feinstein also takes you on the quest with newbies trying to make it as well as the greats, like Nick Price who dropped fifty-footer at the 17th to win The British Open. Ultimately you'll discover that the PGA greats aren't a whole lot different that we are. As Feinstein astutely puts it, "One week you've discovered the secret to the game; the next week you never want to play it again."

I would recommend this book to any golf or sports enthusiast. Also check out Feinstein's "Are You Kidding Me? The Story of Rocco Mediate's Extraordinary Battle with Tiger Woods at the US Open." This is the retelling of the incredible 2008 US Open through the eyes of Rocco Mediate.

2008 US Open DVD | A Duel for the Ages | Tiger Woods & Rocco Mediate

Posted on: Dec 24

2008 US Open DVD I don't remember where I was when Kennedy was shot or when Elvis died, but I'll never forget the 2008 US Open. This played out more dramatically than a Walt Disney movie. (To confess, I was not born yet when Kennedy was shot, and I was just 7 or 8 when Elvis croaked.)

Tiger has won an unbelievable 14 major championships, but the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines is by far the most exciting and dramatic. Tiger began the tournament not even close to 100%, and because of an ailing left knee, he was far from being as prepared as he typically is for a major. In fact, many times during the tournament, Tiger could be seen wincing in pain and limping to his next shot.

By day's end on Sunday, a David vs. Goliath story had developed when an old guy emerged from the pack: Rocco Mediate, a 46-year-old who had a career plagued with his own injuries vs. the greatest player to pick up a golf club. The two would battle in an 18-hole playoff, the only playoff format of its kind on the PGA tour.

This is a fun DVD to watch. If you were lucky enough to catch this duel live, the DVD will bring back great memories of some incredible golf. However, this is more of a highlight reel than an actual recording of the tournament. Don't get me wrong; all the rounds are there, but it's edited so that the rhythm is much different than when you watched it live. Thus, a golf purist is going to be a bit disappointed.

If you really want to relive the event, please check out John Feinstein's book "Are You Kidding Me? The Story of Rocco Mediate's Extraordinary Battle with Tiger Woods at the US Open." This book is a terrific read. Jump on Rocco's bag as he retells all five rounds through one of the best sports writers of our time.

Are You Kidding Me? | Rocco Mediate & Tiger Woods | 2008 US Open | John Feinstein Golf Books

Posted on: Dec 22

Are You Kidding Me? If you are a golf geek like me, then you remember the 2008 US Open like it was yesterday. This tournament played out more dramatically than the movie Sea Biscuit, and Rocco Mediate was more likable and easier to root for than Rocky Balboa.

For those of you that are fortunate enough to not be tremendous golf nerds, here's a quick synopsis. This David (Rocco) and Goliath (Tiger) battle played out in June at Torrey Pines in Southern California. Tiger came into the tournament with very little match practice and was hobbling around on a bad knee. Many times after taking a rip with his driver, he could be seen wincing in pain and limping to his next shot.

Rocco Mediate came into the tournament as an old guy that was past his prime following a career plagued with back injuries and "what might have been's."

Even juicier than the journeyman vs. wounded superstar dynamic was the fact that here were two guys that represent all that is appealing about our great game of golf. Tiger Woods is the best player to have lived and has done more for the game of golf then anybody, and Rocco Mediate represents the fun-loving, happy go-lucky guy who's just happy to be out playing golf on a nice sunny day. He's you, and I, and everybody that has pretended that the 6-foot putt they are about to stroke is to beat Tiger Woods and win the U.S. Open.

John Feinstein, the author, is a very accomplished sports writer who has written two of the top best-selling non-fiction sports books in history: A Good Walk Spoiled, and A Season on the Brink. He is to non-fiction sports writing as Steven King is to horror novels. Through Feinstein, Rocco relives his marvelous five days and his battle with Tiger. You won't find a more likeable and greater guy to root for than Roc. I won't give away the ending -- you'll have to read the book! You can also buy the DVD: 2008 U.S. Open: A Duel for the Ages (2008.)

Nike CCi Forged Iron Club Set | Lucas Glover | Cavity Back w/ Insert

Posted on: Dec 20

Nike CCi Forged Iron Club Set 2009 US Open Champion Lucas Glover has these Nike CCi irons in his bag. They're the most inexpensive irons I've seen that an actual PGA pro plays.

CCi stands for Composite Cavity Insert. The cavity back design makes the club a bit more forgiving than the typical blades the pros normally use. The insert enhances the feel, which to most pros' dismay, is lost with a standard cavity back.

In addition, these irons are constructed from 431 stainless steel which is 25% softer than the 17-4 that is more commonly used, and the tungsten weighted sole moves the center of gravity lower, giving these Nike tour quality wedges even more forgiveness.

Finally, the face is milled to give a more consistent distance and minimize shot dispersion.

I would recommend these clubs for any low handicapper. You really are getting the best of both worlds, with a forgiving cavity back type club built into a traditional clean-looking clubface. And workability is not a problem either, as they've thrown away the book that says you have to use a blade to work the ball. This is simply not the case -- workability is all about the distance between the heel and toe, NOT what's behind the clubface.

Before buying these, you might take a look at the Mizuno MP-58 Iron Set 3-PW as well. This is another tour-quality iron with a forgiving cavity back clubface. Just beware, the price of the Mizunos is considerably more than these bargain basement priced Nike CCi's.

Callaway Tour i Golf Balls | Perimeter Weighted w/ Tungsten Urethane

Posted on: Dec 18

Callaway Tour i Golf Balls We all are familiar with perimeter weighted golf clubs, but have you guys heard of a perimeter weighted golf ball? I submit to you Callaway's Tour i!

The Tour i is a tour quality golf ball. (Okay you could've figured that out by the name.) The ball is four pieces with a dual core. The inner and outer cores work together. The soft inner core (for feel) is counter-balanced with a tungsten infused outer core and a dense mantle layer. This moves most of the ball's weight away from the center of the ball which results in a perimeter weighting that reduces spin when hit with a mighty wack with The Big Dog (your driver).

The cover is a very soft (but durable) thermoset urethane. All of the high-end golf balls today are made with urethane, and the dimple pattern is a unique hexagonal pattern designed to lesson drag and give you more distance.

It's going to be hard to find a golf ball around that is more technologically advanced. More engineering went into this golf ball then the car you are currently driving. I've heard nothing but good things about this golf ball, and one of my friends told me he hits it further than the Pro V1X. Give it a try.

Mizuno MP Chrome Wedge Club | Award Winning Golf Clubs | Forged Carbon Steel

Posted on: Dec 16

Mizuno MP Chrome Wedge Club Earlier, I did a couple reviews on some beautiful new Mizuno Irons: the Mizuno MP-58s and Mizuno MP-68s. This Mizuno MP Wedge is the perfect complement to either of these sets.

The Mizuno MP Series Wedge is a winner of Golf Digest "Recommend" Wedges. Well, there you go, I can just stop writing now -- you don't really need me going on and on lavishing praise. I will just give you some specs to consider, though.

It has the 1025 select carbon steel. This is the premium in all of the accomplished players' clubs today. This material gives the club a solid, consistent feel. The face has U-grooves which spin the heck out of the ball when hit from around the greens. The sole is designed to reduce drag from the turf.

In Amazon's description of this club, they advertise, "The MP Series line is designed for players of all abilities." I'm going to respectfully disagree. This is a beautiful wedge but should only be in the hands of an advanced player. The face is forged with a tour preferred look. A higher handicapper would be much better suited with a forgiving cavity back wedge like the HiPPO HWT Wedge. This wedge is also forged, but it is cavity weighted to be more forgiving and give the novice more confidence.

However, if you have a set of Mizuno irons already, then you obviously know your way around the links. You will love this Mizuno MP Wedge. Enjoy.

Nike Slingshot 2 Iron Club | Rifle Steel Shaft | Golf Pride Tour Wrap Hand Grips

Posted on: Dec 14

NIKE Slingshot 2 Iron Club Yes, you are looking at a 2-iron! And no, this is not the History Channel. These things are just about obsolete these days (which is why you can buy one for only $30.) The 2 iron has gone the way of the type writer, the Betamax videocassette, and MC Hammer's Pants!

Why, you ask? Well, the advent of the hybrid club. DUH! But since you are looking at this 2-iron, I'll give you a quick rundown of the specs before I point you in a better direction.

The Nike Slingshot 2 Iron w/ Rifle Shaft RH Stiff Flex features a Precision Rifle steel shaft and a Golf Pride Tour Wrap grip. These are high end qualities for such an inexpensive club. This is a genuine, well-crafted Nike golf club which (before hybrids came along) would probably sell for $100. So if you really want a 2-iron, go ahead and indulge. At this price, you might want to buy a dozen of them.

However, if you are like the rest of us, please take a look at some of these hybrid clubs. For the scratch to low handicappers, take a look at the TaylorMade Rescue TP Hybrid that Y.E. Yang hit brilliantly on the last hole of the PGA Championship to beat Tiger Woods. If you are an average golfer, please look at the MacGregor Golf MT Hybrid Utility Club.

Finally, you should only buy this 2-iron for the back seat of your car to be used in extreme cases of road rage like Jack Nicholson. Remember? Back in 1994, Jack brandished a golf club after being cut off in traffic. He confessed to Golf Digest, "… I reached into my trunk and specifically selected a club I never used on the course: my 2-iron."

Nike Victory Red Forged Club | Tiger Woods Wedge | Carbon Steel Grooved

Posted on: Dec 12

Nike Victory Red Forged Club Hey kids! That's right; you are looking at Tiger Woods' Wedge. The very wedge that he hit on the 72nd hole of the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines. Of course you remember it set up his 5-foot birdie putt that forced an 18-hole playoff with Rocco Mediate. Right?? And Tiger won! Well this is not the exact one, but one just like it.

What's more is, this is probably the same club that Elin (Tiger's wife) used to eradicate Tiger from his SUV. That's right, -- she busted out both of the back windows with this bad boy.

Before we get to Elin, let me tell you first why Tiger appreciates this club (besides the fact that he helped design it). It is made of 1025 carbon steel. This is the gold standard these days for accomplished players. It's not too hard on the eyes either (just like Elin.)

The grooves are High Rev Grooves. They are milled into the face to the maximum allowable limit and produce a tremendous amount of spin.

What I like best about this club is the way it looks at address. The setup is just gorgeous. Of course, it's a players' club, so a higher handicapper should probably stay away from this tour club profile and look for something bigger with a cavity back. (Perhaps the HiPPO HWT Wedge.)

However, if you need a good solid club for breaking out car windows, with a D5 swing weight the Nike VR Wedge has a solid heavy feel, but not too heavy that a petite nanny/supermodel couldn't wield it wildly over her head and bust out a car window like it was champagne glass.
