Many rain suits are bulky, heavy, and difficult to keep in your bag for those unexpected shower emergencies. There is an alternative, though, in the value rain suit category -- what is called "packable" -- just another term for a lightweight, less-expensive option. Nike offers a few options in this category, for both men and women, that cover the gamut of needs for most golfers. Full-blown, "pro-caliber" rain suits can run into the range of $300 - $500 and even more. Nike packable rain suits are a fraction of that price. Nike's offering in this suit category uses a windproof fabric that is designed to keep out the wind and cold. In addition, the fabric uses their Dri-Fit technology to help maintain comfort next to your skin. The suits are cut loosely and provide drape (for good looks) and a full range-of-motion (perhaps most important) during your golf swing, and feature a vented back. With a mock-neck design -- a stand-up collar that zips all the way to the top -- they provide rain protection for your neck as well. Nike uses Velcro-brand fasteners at the cuff which are adjustable, and also twill pull-tabs on the zippered side pockets in the jacket. The pants also feature side-zip pockets, an elastic waist with a draw cord for a comfortable fit, and snap vented hems.

All of the Nike packable rain suits are made from 100% polyester, are machine washable, and can be packed into a small, zippered case that fits easily in your golf bag.

Proquip Rain Gear Review | Waterproof Golf Jacket & Pants for Men & Women http://www.zipgolfer.com/proquip-rain-gear-review-waterproof-golf-jacket-pants-for-men-women/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/proquip-rain-gear-review-waterproof-golf-jacket-pants-for-men-women/#comments Sun, 15 May 2011 16:53:39 +0000 Jess http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=4130 I used to make fun of my parents when they first learned how to golf. They were like the Postal Service of the links. Through rain, sleet, snow, or hail, they would get those clubs... and flail. Sorry, couldn’t resist. Seriously, though, they would golf in any weather. It led to the purchase of all kinds of gear -- winter gloves, hand warmers, special hats, and umbrellas by the score.

I used to make fun of them (past tense) because I do the same thing. I get the time and the cash in hand, and baby, you can’t keep me away from the course. No matter what. I have been known to play golf in thick fog and snow -- just to be out there. Guess what? If I had the right gear, it actually would have been more enjoyable.

Proquip rain gear is nice for this dedication. 3 years of a waterproof guarantee? Love it. It’s awkward to wear, sure, and not like your normal slacks and polo shirts -- or even like the light windbreaker that you yank out of the bag in the mornings -- but man do you stay dry. No only do they have a good selection of styles, but almost every type of pants and jackets have cool little pockets and nooks for your golf gear. They really think this gear through, and it makes hardcore players like my parents. Or me.

Masters Golf Polo, Green w/ Logo | Augusta National Shirt, Men’s Short Sleeve http://www.zipgolfer.com/masters-golf-polo-green-w-logo-augusta-national-shirt-mens-short-sleeve/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/masters-golf-polo-green-w-logo-augusta-national-shirt-mens-short-sleeve/#comments Mon, 18 Apr 2011 16:04:07 +0000 Robert http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=3865 Masters Golf Polo, Green w/ Logo At the writing of this blog, the 2011 Masters just came to a close, and Tiger didn't win (again). He sure put on a heck of a Sunday charge, though. He shot 31 on the front nine and peppered the pins on the back nine. Unfortunately, he's going through a putting slump like one he's never experience in his illustrious career. Have you ever noticed that when Tiger is in a slump, he still finishes in the top ten of almost every tournament he enters? Tiger's slumps are every other PGA Tour pro's dream.

South African Charl Schwartzel won by two strokes after birdying the last five holes. (He's not going through any slump.) He did it while dodging great runs by several different guys like seasoned major winners Geoff Ogilvy and Angel Cabrera, and a bunch of budding kids like Jason Day, Adam Scott, and Luke Donald.

Seems like green is the color to wear in April -- that is, if you are a golf geek like me. Here's a cool shirt with the Masters logo on the breast pocket. It's the closest thing you are going to get to the jacket -- you can't buy those on Amazon quite yet. The only way you are going to get one of those is practice, practice, practice.

Outback Toyo Hat, Mens Black | Rory Sabatini Cowboy Sport W32S16E http://www.zipgolfer.com/outback-toyo-hat-mens-black-rory-sabatini-cowboy-sport-w32s16e/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/outback-toyo-hat-mens-black-rory-sabatini-cowboy-sport-w32s16e/#comments Tue, 29 Mar 2011 16:28:06 +0000 Robert http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=3772 Outback Toyo Hat, Mens Black I searched near and far to find you a cowboy hat that you could play golf in similar to the one Rory Sabatini wore in his big win at the 2011 Honda Classic. I knew some of you golf geeks would be "Johnny on the spot" to buy one. You can't find them, can you?

This Outback Toyo Cowboy hat is very similar to Rory's, but it's not made by a golf company. You can bet your bippy (I can't -- I already lost mine in a card game) that TaylorMade will come out shortly with this same hat that says "TaylorMade" on it and charge twice as much for it. I'm sure I will review it, too, and I will certainly recommend people to come get this one.

You may have read that Rory wore those hats because of a bout he had with skin cancer. That's the one thing I would warn you about with this hat -- it has holes in the top so the hat will breathe; thus, if you have a bald head like me, you better go with a traditional baseball hat -- or better yet, a big-brimmed sombrero hat.

Titleist Mesh Golf Hat, Flexible | Mens Flex Fit Baseball Cap, Black or White OSFA http://www.zipgolfer.com/titleist-mesh-golf-hat-flexible-mens-flex-fit-baseball-cap-black-or-white-osfa/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/titleist-mesh-golf-hat-flexible-mens-flex-fit-baseball-cap-black-or-white-osfa/#comments Sun, 27 Mar 2011 16:26:45 +0000 Robert http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=3770 Titleist Mesh Golf Hat, Flexible I wonder why nobody has invented a better golf hat yet. You ever notice we all just look like baseball players going to a wedding? We have nice leather shoes and a button-up collared shirt tucked into our neatly ironed slacks with a fancy belt. But from the neck up, we all just look like we are playing centerfield for the Yankees. We might as well have a big "chaw" in our cheek and be constantly adjusting ourselves. Seriously, can't we come up with our own identity? I suggest a fedora with a long brim in front.

Okay, enough nonsense. This Titleist mesh hat is one of the most popular ones I've seen around the golf course. Not only is it stylish, but the mesh hat breathes and keeps you cool. I like the flexible fit as well rather than the hats with the adjustable straps in back. Those hats end up leaving my bald head with a tan line that looks like I have a mouse door in the back of my skull.

This hat comes in white or black. (Wow, quite an array of colors to choose from.) And one size fits all. That is, unless you have a head the size of a watermelon, or a grape. If this is the case, I suggest you try a bandana.

Ferrosi Crop Pant Mens Knickers by Outdoor Research | Wind Resistant Golf Clothing Three Quarter http://www.zipgolfer.com/ferrosi-crop-pant-mens-knickers-by-outdoor-research-wind-resistant-golf-clothing-three-quarter/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/ferrosi-crop-pant-mens-knickers-by-outdoor-research-wind-resistant-golf-clothing-three-quarter/#comments Mon, 21 Mar 2011 16:45:11 +0000 Robert http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=3763 Ferrosi Crop Pant Mens Knickers byThese Ferrosi Knickers are right up my alley because they look like I could wear them into the woods camping and not need another pair of pants for weeks. Plus, they look like something that you could find at one of my favorite stores: REI.

Of course, golfing knickers have been around since the early 1900s. Knickers, or knee pants, are short for "knickerboxer," which used to come in all different sizes. "Plus two" would extend two inches below your knee, "Plus four" four inches, and so on.

You might remember Payne Stewart, who tragically died in a plane crash in 1999, was one of the few touring pros that you could always count on showing up to a PGA tournament in a stylish "old school" pair of knickers

The fabric of these Ferrosis is ideal for golfing because it is wind-resistant and durable. They provide for a wide range of motion because the crotch and the knees have extra room built into them. I think the prAna Men's Nemesis Knickers are even more stylish but not quite as rugged. If you want something that looks a little more old-fashioned or retro, check out the Civia Wool Knickers. For something that looks even more dated, look at these costume golf knickers -- although I'm not a big fan of these as they aren't very practical for playing golf.

Golfer Costume Knickers | Traditional Golf Halloween Party Sports Clothing http://www.zipgolfer.com/golfer-costume-knickers-traditional-golf-halloween-party-sports-clothing/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/golfer-costume-knickers-traditional-golf-halloween-party-sports-clothing/#comments Sat, 19 Mar 2011 16:43:29 +0000 Robert http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=3755 Golfer Costume Knickers I'm a little disappointed that there aren't more choices for the "old school" knickers like Payne Stewart used to wear. My man Payne always looked stylish in his knickers that became his trademark attire on the PGA Tour up until the time his plane crashed in 1999. I found this pair of costume knickers on Amazon, but they are more geared for Halloween than they are for playing 18 holes. I wouldn't wear these to paint my house. They looked like a cheap imitation and more like clown pants to me.

I was able to find some really nice updated stylish knickers for wearing out on the links, but I had to borrow from the world of cycling and climbing. The former being these cool Civia Wool Knickers, which to me look the most like the old-fashioned style than any of the others. I really like the wool material for its comfort, breathability, and range of motion. The latter being the Prana Nemesis Knicker. These knickers look the most hip to me for you modern GQ men while still providing a great deal of performance for golfers because of the extra material in the crotch and knees.

Finally, the Ferrosi knickers are probably the most rugged of the bunch. I would wear these golfing, camping, to the beach, and to a wedding. (Okay, maybe not a wedding.)

Civia Wool Knickers | Golf & Bike Long Shorts w/ Adjustable Knees & Pockets http://www.zipgolfer.com/civia-wool-knickers-golf-bike-long-shorts-w-adjustable-knees-pockets/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/civia-wool-knickers-golf-bike-long-shorts-w-adjustable-knees-pockets/#comments Thu, 17 Mar 2011 16:33:22 +0000 Robert http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=3750 Okay, bear with me, I'm crossing over into the sport of cycling. I know this is ground we golfers don't usually venture into. Why the heck would I participate in a sport where I get all hot and sweaty? Plus, I've yet to see one of those fancy 25-speed racing bikes with a good place to put my Coors Light. Hang in there with me because for now, I'm only interested in the apparel -- specifically, these cool wool knickers.

Since the golf clothing industries have left me wanting more when it comes to this fashionable and practical golf attire, I shall borrow from the cyclists. These handmade knickers have a wool blend that is not only very classy looking, but the material is also ideal for playing golf. Because it was designed for bikers, it moves with you when you swing and it also breathes and is very comfortable. A nice bonus are the side pockets where you can put your cell phone (on vibrate of course) and score card. Finally, they have a strap with a button to adjust the size of the knee.

Payne Stewart, if he were alive today, just may try a pair of these modern-day knickers. He, of course, was one of the last touring pros to sport the old-timey knickers on the PGA Tour. You can find some that look more "old school" here, but they are more geared for a Halloween costume than for playing golf. A couple other good choices that I like are the Prana Nemesis Knicker and Ferrosi Knickers. The Prana are actually designed for climbing, another sport that is lacking an adequate place for me to set my open beer.

prAna Nemesis Knicker Shorts | Men’s Golf Crop Pants, Climbing Sports http://www.zipgolfer.com/prana-nemesis-knicker-shorts-mens-golf-crop-pants-climbing-sports/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/prana-nemesis-knicker-shorts-mens-golf-crop-pants-climbing-sports/#comments Tue, 15 Mar 2011 16:31:42 +0000 Robert http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=3748 prAna Nemesis Knicker Shorts I'm no "fashionista," but I can hold my own when it comes to pop culture these days. Men's shorts have been getting longer and longer. We are getting dangerously close to the line where the inevitable debate will begin: Are they shorts or are they pants?

I'll let you intellectuals in your coffee shops around the world debate that one and just pray quietly that it doesn't lead to a war. In the meantime, I will relate this fashion trend to the history of golf.

Knickers, short for Knickerbockers, were the popular choice of golfers in the early twentieth century. "Plus fours" were a common term, meaning the trousers extended 4 inches below the knee. Additionally, there were "Plus twos," "Plus sixes," and "Plus eights."

Payne Stewart, the popular PGA touring pro that died in a plane crash in 1999, always sported this throwback or "old school" style. These Prana Nemisis Knickers are a lot more updated then the pants he used to wear. They look very current, even if you were not golfing and just relaxing at the aforementioned coffee shop.

Although these knickers are designed especially for climbing, I like the fabric for golfing because it is weather resistant and stretchable nylon for free range of movement. Another good pair is the Ferrosi Knickers. For a more traditional-looking knicker, you can try the Civia Wool Knickers. And if you want something that looks a little more old-fashioned, you could check out this golf knickers costume, but it's more of a gimmick or Halloween costume.

Loudmouth Golf Shorts | Mens Sports Clothing, Colorful Graphic Raspberry Surebet Tooth http://www.zipgolfer.com/loudmouth-golf-shorts-mens-sports-clothing-colorful-graphic-raspberry-surebet-tooth/ http://www.zipgolfer.com/loudmouth-golf-shorts-mens-sports-clothing-colorful-graphic-raspberry-surebet-tooth/#comments Mon, 07 Mar 2011 21:09:26 +0000 Robert http://www.zipgolfer.com/?p=3733 Loudmouth Golf Shorts Try staring at this pattern for a few minutes. Let your eyes go blurry. Do you see the Dolphins jumping out of the water? Try harder!

Naw... I'm just joshing you. There are no dolphins hidden in the pattern -- actually, they're butterflies.

These shorts come from the same fashionable designs that PGA pro John Daly has been wearing almost exclusively. I'm not sure what he's up to, but they certainly get your attention. Unfortunately for John, his outfits are getting more attention than his golf game. Although he has managed a few low rounds here and there -- in events he's allowed to play because of sponsor's exceptions.

If you are the jokester in your foursome then these are the shorts for you. And you have plenty to pick from. There are many different designs and styles, from these "Tooth" patterns (which remind me of my last root canal) to "Raspberry Surebet" and "Disco Balls Black" (you can make up your own joke here -- I'd only get censored).

Also check out the stylish pants (ahem). Here is a lovely pair: The Loudmouth Golf Shagadelic. (Yeah, baby.) These also double as camouflage. That is, if you are trying to blend in a Jim Morrison acid trip.
