This gadget is for you. Practice your putting without ever having to bend over to pick up your golf ball out of the cup. This reminds me of that thing you put on your basketball hoop to practice your free throws. This Robocup doohickey won Best New Product at the PGA Merchandise show.

Here's how it works: It fits in a regulation golf cup. When you sink a putt, the battery-operated (4AA) device flips your golf ball back to you, up to 14 feet or more depending on how fast the green is. It comes with a "Caddy Cord" that you lay around the back of the cup to direct missed putts into the hole to be returned as well.

Here's what I like about it: It allows you to grove a stroke. It's nice to be able to stand in one place and tinker with your setup and stroke until you find a successful combination. However, I would advise you not to use this device exclusively and let it cause you to get lazy. This would be equivalent to standing on the driving range and banging away at balls without going through a pre-shot routine.

The best putting practice is emulating exactly what you will be doing on the golf course. That means go through your routine of marking your ball, lining it up and stroking the putt. And yes, even picking the ball up out of the hole is a great routine to get used to.

I remember looking forward to getting my Golf Digest in the mail and it was usually the 1st article that I turned too.

Simply put, the authors have created lessons for us to focus on that will help us break through and get off of our plateaus. And of course, in golf those big plateaus are breaking 100, 90 and 80.

Every aspect of the game is covered from driving to putting, and each lesson is directed to one of the three categories with teaching by many of the greats. Just like you wouldn't learn algebra before you learn to multiply, you wouldn't teach somebody who hasn't corrected his slice to hit a high hook when the wind is left to right.

However, while it's not prudent for the higher handicappers to read the lower handicapper instructions, the reverse is not necessarily true. Even though I was excited to read the sections directed towards breaking 80 first, it helped to go back and review some of the basics taught to the breaking 100 and 90 as well.

I highly recommend this book to all golfers. But keep in mind it's a compilation of tips rather than a book to build a perfect golf swing. For a comprehensive book on learning the fundamentals, check out: "The Fundamentals of Hogan."

It's a putting trainer. The Greenberry uses physics and "advance computing technology" to measure your speed and putting distance.

The way it works is: you put this down on whatever you are putting on (your carpet, or outside on an actual green) and calibrate the speed of the green, and then stroke a putt. The device will tell you how hard you hit it and how far the putt went. With this information while you practice, you can improve your technique and feel.

I'm not a big fan of this, but there are two redeeming qualities. First, it's great if you want to practice long putts in a confined area, like your basement or living room. You can practice the feel of a 50-foot putt in a room that is only 8 by 10.

The other cool thing is that the Greenberry will tell you the stimpmeter of the greens on your home course. Just take it with you on your next round of golf, and the machine will calibrate this for you. I've been privy many times to the guys speculating the speed of the greens - especially if they've been shaved down to play very quick. This is the first gadget I've seen that will actually read this for you.

As far as improving your putting, I'd save my money, or spend it on the Stance Minder Training System. This is a great tool to teach you to line up square to your target line and stroke your putts square.

It was in one of my best friend's and coworker's office for at least 15 years. His name was Chris Brown. He kept two putters and three or four golf balls lying next to it. When any of us would get restless or head to the water cooler, we would stop by Chris' office and take a few putts and hone our putting skills.

It is actually a lot tougher than it looks. We typically would give ourselves about six to ten feet. What makes it tricky (besides reading the break of the office carpet) is getting the speed right. If you putt it too hard, it will just hit the ramp and fly right over the Putting Partner. Of course, if you put it too soft, then it won't get up the ramp at all.

The coolest thing is, once you get the hang of it, you don't have to move. The tool will return your ball directly back to in front of your toes. Make sure to go through your pre-shot routine each time so you can really groove that sweet stroke for later out on the links when it counts. You may laugh, but there were plenty of times in the past when I had a pressure putt to win some skins out on my home course, and I thought back to Chris' office and tried to recreate that tension-free stroke.

I'm not really sure who said this, but they were on to something. Take it from me. I'm the guy who rushes out to the driving range, loosens up a little bit, and then pulls out my driver and starts swinging for the fences. The only thing I get out of it is a sore back and some calluses.

This DVD set features some very big names from the world of golf, including Padraig Harrington, Tom Kite, Brad Faxon, Stewart Cink, David Toms and Dana Quigley. It is hosted by Dr. Bob Rotella, a sports psychologist who has worked with many PGA Tour Pros and written some fantastic golf books.

I've read Dr. Rotella's book, "Golf Is Not A Game Of Perfect." It's awesome. I remember one story from it involving PGA Tour pro Davis Love III. Davis was having trouble putting, freezing up while standing over pressure putts. Rotella gave him a tip that involved envisioning one of those silly little ornaments that execs have on their desks. (You know the ones with the steel balls that hang down and you swing one ball on the end and in turn it hits the other balls, sending the one on the opposite end up and back, and then the cycle repeats.) Davis imagined the rhythm and beat from that toy, and now when his head moves back to his ball after checking his target line, this in turn starts his putter back (like the balls colliding on the executives desk) and he continues to stroke the putt in time with the same tempo.

I would recommend these DVDs, and if you follow the practice techniques that these great golfers (and psychologist) impart to you, your golf game will improve. Trust me, it will trump banging away endlessly with that driver.
