Here's a secret for you "Mudders" out there who like to play in the off season. Rose City is the best draining golf course in Portland. As a matter of fact, I played this course last January and I couldn't believe how well the course played. My ball was bouncing in the fairway (not plugging), and the greens were firm and rolling great.
However, Rose City isn't exactly what I would call a pristine golf course, although the greens usually roll very true. Located in southeast Portland, it's your typical muni course with some interesting idiosyncrasies. For one, the back nine starts out with two consecutive par 5s. They actually play more like long par 4s for you big hitters. And there is another reachable par 5 on the back as well.
Still, I don't want to give you the wrong idea -- the course isn't a pitch and putt. It will challenge even the low handicappers, as the par 4s are pretty tightly lined with trees and 17 and 18 are two of the tougher holes I've played in Portland.
I recommend this course to all golfers, but don't expect a whole lot in terms of a clubhouse or a beverage cart. Also, they aren't real strict on pace of play, so bring some patience with you.
For you lower handicappers who are looking for a little more bang for your buck, go play The Great Blue at Heron Lakes instead.
