I'm an equipment junkie. There, I said it. Have been ever since I discovered golf more than 20 years ago. With the endless possibilities of head, shaft, and grip, there is virtually no limit to what can be created in a golf club. I've built dozens of sets in that time and reshafted countless drivers and fairway woods.

If there is one thing that most golfers consistently overlook, it's the shaft in their clubs. Most golfers buy a club and know enough to get either Regular or Stiff flex, but beyond that, they assume the manufacturer has put something in the club that works. In most cases, that is probably wrong. Each golfer's swing dynamics are unique, and there is a shaft solution that is best for them -- but to think it comes from simply grabbing a new club off the rack is shortsighted.

The Project X Graphite shafts from True Temper are just one choice (among hundreds, or more). Originally developed by Royal Precision Golf, True Temper bought them out a few years back. Royal was well known for developing the Rifle Shaft -- next to the True Temper Dynamic Gold, one of the best selling and best performing iron shafts of all time. Project X Graphite shafts were the next breakthrough from Royal Precision and come in a wide variety of performance characteristics, but are most notably geared to the lower end of the handicap scale with a real push to Tour caliber golf.

Project X driver and hybrid shafts are engineered using True Temper’s proprietary Zonal Design Theory (ZDT) which divides the shaft into three zones—butt, mid and tip sections. Each zone is optimized for performance using a specific design technology.

  • Butt section: Hex-Axial Reinforcement Technology provides unmatched cross sectional stability minimizing energy lost to ovalization.
  • Mid section: Constant Taper Design eliminates localized bending and creates even loading and unloading for maximum energy transfer.
  • Tip section: Elongated Double Wrapped 55 MSI Reinforcement for a firmer tip section, which minimizes droop and lag and reduces back spin.

These three elements result in Tour-level Launch and Spin: The Project X driver and hybrid shafts provide penetrating launch conditions with ultra low spin. The stiff butt, soft mid-section combine with the double reinforced tip section to maintain a strong angle of attack and greatly reduce spin, even in higher loft drivers.

If all of that flew right over your head, welcome to the crowd. Most people don't even know there are three parts to a golf shaft. The point here of course, is that there is a lot of technology available in golf shafts -- and there is one out there to maximize your game. Project X provides a great online fitting tool and will help you to select the shaft frequency rating that is best for you. While it may seem daunting at first, a little effort here in finding the right shaft will yield results in the long run. Think of it this way -- the shaft is what connects you, the golfer, to the ball. The shaft is the engine that makes the club perform, and probably the most important component of a golf club, and yet it is the least understood and most overlooked.
