My first set of "good" irons were Wilson Staff tour blades in 2-SW. Though rare (for me), a purely struck shot with one of those irons was not only a thing of beauty to see, but also a nearly sensual experience to the hands and ears. ...
Tommy Armour Golf Clubs | Irons, Set Reviews
Devilish charm with a touch of class. That’s Tommy Armour. A name synonymous with success, these products have made a name for themselves, especially with their targeted 40+ year-old market.
Wounded and decorated veteran of World War 1. Amazing musician. Best-selling author. Oh, and in his spare time, he won 25 PGA victories — including three Majors. He was also the most respected (and expensive) golf instructor in the late 1920s and early ’30s. This name on clubs rings with heritage and legacy.
It is pretty simple to find most of the Tommy Armour clubs to be labeled with the “Silver Scot” name, as that was his nickname, and a good majority of what you will find are different types of irons and iron sets. They are classic in appearance — not falling to the temptation of the drastic scoops, wide bottoms and strange offsets. They are a clean and simple shape — sometimes with a slight cavity back, but still very “traditional.”
A great example of this is the Tommy Armour Silver Scot Iron Golf Club Set. These clubs do not cry out for attention and have a very muted appearance. However, their quality is soon evident, and golfers can see that it is pretty easy to work the ball with a set like this.
You can also find specific irons that are getting harder and harder to find such as 1 and 2 irons. An example would be the Tommy Armour 845 Irons that are surprisingly easy to hit for a 1 or 2 iron. In addition, these clubs have a nice graphite shaft that flexes nicely.
Overall, this is the place to find the clubs that tend to look “classy” and have muted styles and a “silver” traditional appearance, as opposed to the clubs with a more radical and wild design.
