Anyway, I was enthralled to see Tim playing the same color ball as Buck, and later in the telecast I heard Nick Faldo explain the idea. You see, yellow is the most visible color in the visual spectrum, and psychologists say that green is the most calming. Thus, the brilliant designers (or marketers) at Srixon built this snot-colored golf ball. (Ahhh, I feel so calm looking at it. Maybe I'll paint my bedroom this color...)

Obviously, I'm not a big fan of the color, but the ball does have some redeeming qualities. The Srixon Z Star X has the thinnest cover I've seen. The soft urethane cover is 0.5mm or 0.02 inches. The progressive core is firmer towards the outside to improve spin and launch conditions for every club in the bag.

One cool thing about the ball is you aren't going to find a thinner cover. The urethane cover is 0.5 mm, or 0.02 inches. The core gets progressively firmer as you move towards the outside. This is designed to improve spin and launch conditions for every club from your driver to your pitching wedge.

Finally, here is something I bet you've never heard of: the ball has a coating on the cover. (Don't ask me what it is.) The idea is to increase friction on short shots around the green. I'm guessing they made sure this passed USGA rules.

I like this ball for those of you with big games but not big bank accounts. This ball is for slower swingers, those with swing speeds less than 105 mph. If your swing speed is more than 105 mph, check out the Srixon Z Star X ball -- it's firmer. Okay, enough of my stupid standup routine... let's talk about the golf ball. Did I mention that the cover was thin? In fact, the soft urethane cover is 0.5 mm, or 0.02 inches. This combines with the progressive core -- progressively firmer towards the outside -- to improve spin and launch conditions for every club in the bag.

The most unique feature of the golf ball is the coating on the thin cover. (Don't put it in your mouth.) It's coated with an unspecified substance that is supposed to increase friction for more spin around the greens. (I'm told it's the same stuff they soak Power Bait in to attract bass.)

This Z star X is firm and was designed for you folks with fast swing speeds (over 105mph). If your swing speed is slower, check out the Srixon Z Star. Both balls have a thin cover. In fact, the cover is soooo thin that you have to boil the golf ball before playing it. Heyyooooo.

This fairway wood uses "Starburst" variable face technology that consists of a custom 455 steel face with variable thickness. This increases the C.O.R., which is the trampoline effect of the face. This makes the entire face of the club very hot and allows for off-center hits to still jump off of the face.

The coolest thing about the club is the twin cams. And yes, I'm still talking about a 3 wood, not a 1966 Ford Cortina. The sole has twin cams that move extra weight to the perimeter of the clubhead, which creates a higher MOI.

Finally, the aggressive leading allows the club to pick the golf ball off of tight lies and go in foraging after those tough lies in the rough.

Although the wood looks like it was designed for better players, I think all golfers will appreciate swinging this sweet Srixon Fairway Wood. If you are looking for something bigger and more forgiving, take a look at the Nike SQ Machspeed 3 wood.

In addition, Srixon uses their own proprietary titanium that lets them move more weight low and deep. This gives the driver a high MOI. Combine this with the "six-part bulge-and-roll" design which controls sidespin, and you have a driver that you can hit long and straight very consistently.

I really like the set up of this club. It lines up very square and is very easy to draw. The best thing about the driver is its consistent medium ball flight, straight and high almost every time.

The downside is you won't get much roll. The high ball flight is all carry and lands soft with very little run.

For those of you looking for a more penetrating low ball flight, take a look at the Callaway Diablo Edge Tour Driver. This driver has a lot of punch and rolls forever.

The Nuts and Bolts: This 2-piece ball has a new butadiene rubber core. This core gets softer closer to the center and works with the ionomer-blend cover to promote a high ball flight with low spin. It has a 328-dimple design with eight dimple sizes, also designed to promote a high ball flight.

The feel of this distance ball is better than most in this price range. Of course it's not a Titleist Pro V1, but for you golfers with the priority on distance and economy, this is the right ball for you.

This Srixon WG-706 Wedge should do the trick. I loved forged clubs and this one has a beautiful look. It looks like most of the clubs the guys are swinging on tour. It has engraved U-shaped grooves that are designed to work as a channel keeping the clubface clean and the dirt and grass out. It will spin the ball out of any lie because the face has a "friction generating Face Press Milling treatment."

The feel is what I like best of all. This forged club is exceptionally soft. It uses 1020 carbon steel.

The only thing I would caution you when considering this club is: they've intentionally reduced the heel bounce so you can play those touch shots around the green. Just keep in mind (for those of you used to playing those sand wedges that have a huge bounce built into them) this will affect your bunker shots .

All in all, this wedge is going to improve your short game, but unfortunately you're still going to need to practice.

These Srixon TriSpeed 1st were sitting on the counter and caught my eye, so I decided to switch from my usual Titleist PRO V1 ball and give them a try.

After loosening up and swinging a few clubs around me, I teed up one of these bad boys and made a pass at it. "WHACK!" The ball sailed high and long and released down the fairway like the Road Runner trying to stay ahead of Wiley Coyote. Man, this ball is hot!

For you golf geeks, here's the technology behind this fireball: It's a three piece ball. It has a "Energetic Gradient Growth" core for high and efficient energy transfer. The 333 dimple pattern is designed for a high ball flight, and has "Highly resilient Rabalon HR blended ionomer" for enhanced ball speed. I don't really know what any of this means, but did I mention this ball is hot?!

I don't usually play a distance ball because I like a little more feel and workability, but this ball really surprised me. Around the greens it has a pretty decent feel. I was able to get my chips to hit and check up just like my PRO V1's. Although, as you would expect, it doesn't quite match up on approach shots. Whereas the PRO V1 stops and dances on the green, the Srixon TriSpeed releases more.

I will definitely carry a few of these in my bag when I'm feeling like a little more pop, and I'm trying to chase down that long hitter that occasionally joins our group. Otherwise, I'll stick with keeping my bag stocked with the Pro V1s... oh, and try to get to the course on time for once.
