Let me be clear, though. I never allow a brand to skew my thinking into blind acceptance. If you doubt me, read my betrayal review of the Nike Slingshot Irons.

This ball, however, was very nice. It's no One Tour, by any means -- as it has a solid core, 3-Piece ball, and not a 4, and it is made of seamless ionomer and not urethane. This produces a "cheaper" feel to the ball (some say), but I honestly don't know if I could tell the difference at my level. The biggest plus for me was the amount of ball I got for the price, without having to cater down to a "Power Distance" or a "Juice," for Pete's sake. All-around good ball that feels really good to putt as well.

They provided consistent distance for me, especially when I tried slowing my swing down and trusting my clubs -- as the balls truly belong to a golfer with moderate swing speeds. This ball would be well worth the money.

Now if I could only get that Swoosh to stop right before it rolls into the hole like Tiger did...

It took me by surprise because I had never seen a tour pro play a yellow golf ball before. Usually I'm more accustomed to seeing a yellow ball in the hands of my buddy, Buck. He shows up every Wednesday with a whole laundry hamper full of all kinds of colored golf balls. I like to take him out to my local Executive Par 3 course: The Putt and Pitcher. (Free wings on Wednesday if you don't wear a tank top.) I never asked Buck where he got all those golf balls. It's usually my policy not to ask Buck questions that I could later be called on in court to recount.

Anyway, I was enthralled to see Tim playing the same color ball as Buck, and later in the telecast I heard Nick Faldo explain the idea. You see, yellow is the most visible color in the visual spectrum, and psychologists say that green is the most calming. Thus, the brilliant designers (or marketers) at Srixon built this snot-colored golf ball. (Ahhh, I feel so calm looking at it. Maybe I'll paint my bedroom this color...)

Obviously, I'm not a big fan of the color, but the ball does have some redeeming qualities. The Srixon Z Star X has the thinnest cover I've seen. The soft urethane cover is 0.5mm or 0.02 inches. The progressive core is firmer towards the outside to improve spin and launch conditions for every club in the bag.

That is economy. This ball is a lot cheaper than my number 1 favorites -- Titleist's Pro V and Pro V1x -- but the performance is not that much different.

One cool thing about the ball is you aren't going to find a thinner cover. The urethane cover is 0.5 mm, or 0.02 inches. The core gets progressively firmer as you move towards the outside. This is designed to improve spin and launch conditions for every club from your driver to your pitching wedge.

Finally, here is something I bet you've never heard of: the ball has a coating on the cover. (Don't ask me what it is.) The idea is to increase friction on short shots around the green. I'm guessing they made sure this passed USGA rules.

I like this ball for those of you with big games but not big bank accounts. This ball is for slower swingers, those with swing speeds less than 105 mph. If your swing speed is more than 105 mph, check out the Srixon Z Star X ball -- it's firmer. And for those of you needing to be calmed by soft amber colors, check out this Srixon Z Star X Yellow golf ball.

This Z star X is firm and was designed for you folks with fast swing speeds (over 105mph). If your swing speed is slower, check out the Srixon Z Star. Both balls have a thin cover. In fact, the cover is soooo thin that you have to boil the golf ball before playing it. Heyyooooo.

It's a tour golf ball designed for amateur swing speeds. What does that even mean? I think it means you get to pay more money for a ball that resembles one that Tiger would play. Why didn't I think of this? I'm going to start selling NASCAR-quality tires for beat-up, old Volkswagens.

All joking aside, I see what Bridgestone is trying to do here. Perhaps those of you with slower swing speeds are feeling neglected by the makers of good quality golf balls. This B330 RX has a great feel that scratch players and tour professionals would appreciate, but is geared for those of you with swing speeds less then 105 mph. This is accomplished by using a gradual compression core. Plus, Bridgestone has reengineered the mantle layer to improve the ball's workability.

I like that Bridgestone has a ball for everybody, and their fitting system is second to none. Having said that, for you golfers with swing spends under 105 mph, I'd save my money and buy the Bridgestone E6s or E6+. But please call me if you need some race car tires for your VW.

And it's about time. Haven't we all been waiting for this? For you ignoramuses out there that don't know what icosahedral means, I guess I can be bothered to clue you in. An icosahedron is a geometrical shape. It's a regular polyhedron with 20 identical equilateral triangular faces, 30 edges and 12 verticals. (Thank goodness for Wikipedia. And Al Gore for the internet.)

Pinnacle uses this 332-dimple icosahedral pattern to reduce wind drag on the downrange flight and increase consistency while limiting dispersion.

Let me break it down for you golfers. The ball launches high and has very little spin. The best thing about the Pinnacle Dimension (other than improving our vocabulary) is the softer cover. For years, Pinnacle was a rock-hard distance ball that higher handicappers had to endure because they are cheap, they rolled really far in the fairway, and you couldn't chip the cover if you rolled over them with a lawn mower.

This ball is still very inexpensive, durable, and long, but it's a lot more pleasing on the hands at impact then the old Pinnacle golf balls.

No, it's not clubhead speed. And no, it's not power. These things certainly contribute to the ball traveling farther, but the main thing that gets the ball moving towards the heavens is the angle of your clubface when it impacts the golf ball and the compression of the golf ball when it is impacted.

Enough with Golf Ball 101. This Noodle Easy Distance is geared for those of you with slower swing speeds because it has a lower compression. Simply stated, you can flatten the golf ball easier with your golf club (swinging less than 85 mph) then the ball that Tiger Woods is hitting (at 120 mph).

The coolest thing about this latest Noodle Easy Distance is that TaylorMade has improved on the cover. It's still an Ionomer blend that is durable and firm, but it has a softer feel and spins easier on the greens than its predecessor.

I recommend this ball for those of you easy swingers looking for more distance and a little more spin and feel then your old distance ball. Better players should be aware that this ball will balloon on iron shots if you have a faster swing speed then 85mph.

I like the ball because it is very soft for a distance ball. Let's take a closer look.

This ball has a "high-resiliency core." This is designed to benefit a variety of different swing speeds. The core also reduces spin when smashed by your driver. Less spin means the ball won't slice or hook as much on less-than-perfect swings.

I'm a big fan of Callaway's Hex dimples that they use for most of their golf balls. This hex design makes the ball more aerodynamic than traditional dimples.

The cover of the ball, as I said earlier, is soft for a distance ball but still not as soft as a Pro V1. The ball isn't what I would call a "feel" ball and doesn't spin a whole lot around the greens. Having said that, it is a lot more playable than your typical Top Flite ball, and the cost isn't that much higher.

Overall, I like this Callaway Diablo and would recommend it for mid to high handicappers who are looking for more distance with a golf ball that doesn't feel like a rock when you hit it.

These obnoxiously-colored balls are designed for seniors and juniors who are looking for the most distance possible with a slower swing speed. The ball has a 70 compression. For those of you who aren't golf ball scientists, 70 compression means the ball can easily be compressed by a slower swing, giving you longer drives. It has a dimple pattern designed to lessen side spin and give you a higher ball flight. The cover is made of surlyn. This material is very hard, which means it will be very durable.

I would recommend these balls to you seniors who are looking for a ball that will give you extra distance and be easy to spot from a long way down the fairway (and perhaps sometimes in the deep rough).
