Bobby Jones Lob Wedge Club Check out this Bobby Jones Lob Wedge -- it has a face insert! We've all seen the soft inserts in our putters, but this is the first insert that I've seen in a wedge. That's not all, either. Club maker Jesse Ortiz and short game specialist David Pelz collaborated to bring you this modern wedge with all kinds of cool new technology.

This Bobby Jones Lob Wedge has a classic look, but this is about all that is typical about this wedge. The insert is placed in a pocket that is milled into the face. It is made of an aerospace steel alloy Carpenter 440XH. This is an extremely resilient material that is resistant to wear. They claim that this material will prevent the grooves from wearing for up to 10,000 shots (which is about three rounds of golf for me).

The club incorporates a 3M bonding membrane placed behind the face insert. After heating the membrane, it bonds to the club stronger than as if welded. This in effect provides for the insert to retain a soft spongy feel and gives the wedge a perimeter weighting.

I would recommend this club for medium to lower handicappers that can appreciate the feel and playability of this cool-looking wedge. Although I am hooked on the soft insert, I'm not trading in my Vokey Spin Milled wedge quite yet. The Bobby Jones doesn't spin the ball nearly as well as the Vokey when played from around the greens. However, the Bobby Jones Lob wedge will not scuff your golf ball like the Vokey.
